Training Workshop on Integrated Assessment for African Countries
Nairobi, Kenya, 19 July 2004
This training workshop is part of a series of capacity building activities for Africa planned during the second phase of the UNEP-UNCTAD Capacity Building Task Force for Trade, Environment and Development (CBTF). It responded to the capacity building needs identified during the CBTF Regional Workshop on Post Doha Issues on Trade and Environment held in Cape Town, South Africa on 22 May 2003, in which integrated assessment was highlighted as a priority for further capacity building activities.
The training workshop targeted selected African research and training institutions as well as economic and trade bodies in Africa. The objective of the workshop was to train trainers as well as to introduce economic and trade entities in the region to integrated assessment as a tool to identify impacts of trade and trade related policies on environment and development. The workshop aimed to provide participants with a better understanding of the concept of integrated assessment and discuss possibilities of its application in African countries.
In preparing for the training workshop, UNEP’s Economics and Trade Branch (ETB) coordinated the development of a draft Training Resource Manual for Integrated Assessment, which is based on the experiences gained through 18 country projects on integrated assessment of trade-related policies conducted in all parts of the world. The training workshop provided an opportunity to receive feedback from participants on the training resource manual before its finalization.
