  Summary
Among the Mediterranean countries, Lebanon was commissioned to work as a task manager for the theme of Free Trade, Environment and Sustainable Development, within the context of the Mediterranean Commission on Sustainable Development. The LMOE conducted preliminary work in this field and worked on a case study for the agro-food and the chemicals industry in Lebanon.
This case study involved the development of a model to evaluate the impact of increased trade on the environment, allowing for a better identification and understanding of emerging trade-environment problems and means of addressing them, both nationally and at the regional levels.
In this Country Project, the LMOE will extend its work beyond the study of specific industries to develop a national action preparedness plan for the upcoming trade liberalisation process, building national capacities to evaluate and eventually face the challenges of trade liberalisation, and develop a monitoring mechanism to be shared by countries in the region.
The Country Project report will become a resource tool for the CBTF to support: research on integrated assessments of trade and trade policy; other country projects; and policy dialogue activities. In addition, it will be disseminated as a reference source through the CBTF networking and information exchange mechanisms.
