First International Advisory Group Meeting on the Wildlife Trade Policy Initiative

Geneva, Switzerland, 19-20 June 2006

The UNEP-UNCTAD CBTF, together with the CITES Secretariat and the Graduate Institute for Development Studies (IUED) convened for first International Advisory Group (IAG) meeting for the joint initiative on Enhancing Capacities to Review National Wildlife Trade Policies. The meeting was held on 19 and 20 June 2006 at the International Environment House in Geneva, Switzerland.

The IAG Meeting provided an opportunity for IAG members to comment and advise on the initial draft of a Wildlife Trade Policy Assessment Framework that is currently being developed by the project partners. The Framework provides guidelines for conducting the policy reviews and includes a set of possible assessment methodologies and indicators. In addition, IAG members had the opportunity to provide guidance and recommendations on the implementation of the project at the national level.

The aim of the two-year joint initiative is to promote sustainable development by enhancing the capacities of governments in developing countries and countries in transition to review, design and implement effective and sustainable national wildlife trade policies. The initiative, which is being funded by the Geneva International Academic Network and the European Union, directly responds to CITES COP Decisions 13.74 and 13.75 in which CITES Parties called for the Secretariat to work with international organizations in supporting national-level reviews of wildlife trade policies.
